The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for their preseason clash with the New York Jets at Acrisure Stadium on Friday. The Steelers crushed the Green Bay Packers, 29-8, in their preseason opener at the same venue on Thursday.

The Steelers are trying to hit their goals in training camp. On Sunday, they also tried to hit home runs—literally.

The team held its annual home run competition, and it was running back Eli Heidenreich who came out on top, as reported by DK Pittsburgh Sports’ Chris Halicke.

“Eli Heidenreich hadn’t swung a bat since senior year of high school, but won the annual training camp home run derby,” said Halicke.

Heidenreich admitted that he enjoyed his victory in the Steelers’ yearly contest in training camp.

“I used my years and years of baseball for that. It was a fun time competing against some of the guys,” said the 23-year-old rookie, who battled wide receiver Ben Skowronek and linebackers Alex Highsmith and Patrick Queen in the final round.

“The last few guys, we were having some friendly banter there.”

Heidenreich dabbled in baseball at Mt. Lebanon High School in Pennsylvania, describing himself as a contact hitter and a lead-off hitter. He, however, stressed that he was always a “football guy.”

Pittsburgh drafted Heidenreich in the seventh round out of the Navy, making it a fateful homecoming for the young newcomer. He will try to make it to the 53-man roster, but he will have an uphill climb since the team already has running backs Jaylen Warren, Rico Dowdle, Kalen Johnson, and Travis Homer.

He is only the fifth player from the Navy to be drafted into the NFL in the last decade.
