Last month, Stefon Diggs was found not guilty on assault and strangulation charges. An NFL investigation later found insufficient evidence to levy a suspension under the personal conduct policy.
As a result, Diggs is in position to line up his next deal. The veteran wideout has been on the open market since being released by the Patriots, but he is among many experienced players who could have an agreement in place by the start of training camp. The possibility of signing with the Commanders is something Diggs addressed during an interview with Fox5 in Washington.
“It’s a lot of hopes,” the four-time Pro Bowler said. “We’re kind of figuring it out, working through some things. I did have a small piece of me, like, ‘Damn, it would be great to come home and play in front of the fans I used to play in front of as a young adolescent in college and just kind of doing something for the city.’ Hopefully, things do work out. We’ll see how it goes.”
Diggs was born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He played collegiately at Maryland, so signing with the Commanders would represent a homecoming in his case. Of course, it would also give Washington a veteran complement to Terry McLaurin at the receiver position. The team has consistently been linked to Brandon Aiyuk, who remains under contract with the 49ers despite his San Francisco tenure having run its course. Diggs could represent an alternative to Aiyuk with respect to free agent options (presuming the latter is eventually released).
With Diggs entering his age-33 season, expectations will likely be tempered in 2026. A short-term pact with the Commanders or another team could still prove to be worthwhile, though. Diggs posted a statline of 85-1,013-4 during his lone Patriots campaign and helped them reach the Super Bowl. 2024 – a season in which Diggs suffered an ACL tear – remains the only one since 2018 in which he failed to post at least 1,000 receiving yards.
The Commanders currently sit third in the NFL in terms of cap space with nearly $44MM available. Diggs inked a three-year deal with New England last offseason, but his next contract will presumably be shorter in length. With clarity on the Aiyuk front still proving to be elusive, it will be interesting to see if Washington shows interest in a Diggs agreement over the coming weeks.
