Steve Young again hints 49ers' Kyle Shanahan doesn't trust Jimmy Garoppolo

Hall of Famer Steve Young has again suggested San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan doesn't fully trust quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. 

As David Bonilla noted for 49ers WebZone, Young was asked during an appearance on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR if he believes Shanahan is overly conservative as an offensive play-caller at least as it pertains to the current NFL season. 

"It goes back to the conversation we've had [about the trust in Jimmy Garoppolo]," Young responded. "... because I can guarantee you that Kyle would love to throw for 500 yards a game. He's like his dad, I'm telling you. ... It's really just how they manage each other and how they create the space for each other. The management is full-speed ahead. They're managing each other, and that's how it is, and that's fruitful, and it's fine." 

Late last month when the 49ers were 3-4 on the campaign, Young remarked that a "lack of trust between" Shanahan and Garoppolo was handcuffing San Francisco's offense, particularly in the second halves of contests. While All-Pro Deebo Samuel recently praised his team's ability to win games in instances when Garoppolo fails to throw a single touchdown pass, Young thinks Shanahan would prefer to air it out more against top-tier opponents even though his team is now 5-4. 

"The idea, philosophically, that Kyle wants to run the ball is not true, and people need to leave that behind," Young explained. 

Statistically, Garoppolo has been a solid QB1 since taking over for the injured Trey Lance in Week 2. Per ESPN, the 31-year-old heads into Week 11 sixth among eligible signal-callers with a 100.0 passer rating, eighth with a 66.8% completion percentage, and third with an average of 8.1 yards per pass attempt. He's 19th with a 48.2 total QBR and has thrown for 1,931 yards with 11 touchdowns and four interceptions to go along with a pair of rushing scores in eight games and seven starts. 

The 49ers next face the 4-6 Arizona Cardinals in Mexico City this coming Monday night.
