Tanner McKee Faces Challenge Behind Struggling Eagles Offensive Line

With Jalen Hurts out, Tanner McKee appears to be the Philadelphia Eagles’ answer at quarterback for the remainder of the season. Despite the Eagles falling to the Carolina Panthers in his first start of the year, offensive coordinator Sean Mannion had plenty of praise for McKee’s decision-making and accuracy.

“I think he’s really sharp mentally,” Mannion said. “He’s accurate. He gets the ball out of his hands quickly. I think he does all the things that you ask at the quarterback in terms of his pre-snap operation and being able to use his cadence, being able to handle things at the line of scrimmage if you need adjustments. So, I think he’s strong in a lot of those areas, and I think it opens up some things for us offensively.”

According to Next Gen Stats, McKee recorded the third-lowest time to throw among quarterbacks in Week 6. By comparison, Jalen Hurts ranked sixth-highest through his first five starts of the season, highlighting a fundamental difference in how the two quarterbacks operate.

McKee’s quick release can help neutralize opposing pass rushes by getting the ball out before pressure arrives. However, it also raises a question about how Philadelphia’s offense functions when its quarterback can’t consistently extend plays outside the pocket. Hurts’ mobility allows him to escape pressure, buy time for receivers to uncover, and turn broken plays into positive gains. McKee, meanwhile, is more reliant on timing and getting the ball out on schedule.

That distinction matters given the state of Philadelphia’s offensive line, which has had a revolving door of names making starts, whether that is due to a sudden retirement, a trade, or a slew of injuries. Here are a few key statistics and where the Eagles offensive line ranks across the NFL:

  • Average time to pressure: 30th
  • Quick pressure rate: 31st
  • Pressure rate: 32nd
  • Unblocked pressure rate: 32nd

As previously stated, Hurts has the capability to escape pressure, which has been a key factor in both the Eagles’ wins this season. However, pressure seemed to be a weakness for the Eagles with Hurts this past Sunday. The Panthers pressured McKee on 41.7% of his attempts. Against pressure, McKee finished with a 47% completion percentage, -0.40 EPA, 4.9 yards per attempt, and a 15% pressure-to-sack rate.

The game script led to McKee throwing over 40 times due to the lack of success in the Eagles’ running game. That dynamic may shift with the return of Saquon Barkley, but this could very well be the Eagles’ new normal with McKee at the helm.

Given his limited mobility, opposing defenses will likely send extra pressure early and often, testing the young and inexperienced offensive line protecting the fourth-year quarterback. It will be a good test for offensive coordinator Sean Mannion to scheme up ways for McKee to press the easy button and get the ball to his dynamic playmakers without letting the offense become stagnant and predictable.
