Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes has had an unbelievable career in the NFL. Heading into Sunday night's game against the Houston Texans, Mahomes had thrown for 35,590 yards and 267 touchdowns with just 81 interceptions in 124 career games over nine seasons in the league.
He has made six Pro Bowl appearances, won two NFL MVP awards and three Super Bowl titles in his illustrious career.
So far this season, he and the Chiefs have been uncharacteristically up and down. Going into Sunday's game, Kansas City had a 6-6 record and was in third place in the AFC West.
Through the first 12 games, Mahomes had completed 64.6% of his passes for 3,238 yards and 22 touchdowns with seven interceptions.
The 30-year-old quarterback struggled in the first half on Sunday against the Texans, going 8-of-12 passing for just 58 yards and one interception, as the Chiefs trailed Houston 10-0 at the break.
With 3:24 left in the second quarter, Mahomes scrambled around the pocket looking for somewhere to pass and was able to get a five-yard pass off to JuJu Smith-Schuster. While he was throwing, Mahomes had his face mask grabbed by Texans defensive end Mario Edwards Jr.
This resulted in a 15-yard penalty against Edwards and the Texans, giving the Chiefs an automatic first down.
Face mask penalties carry a punishment from the NFL for players who commit them. Players are fined $11,593 on the first offense and $17,389 on the second offense, according to the league's website.
Because of this, Edwards will likely be punished for his penalty against Mahomes. He will find out his fate when the NFL releases all its fines from the previous week's games on Saturday.
