The San Francisco 49ers haven’t even reached the regular season yet, and somehow the injury conversation is already taking over the team.
Stop me if you’ve heard that before.
San Francisco has dealt with significant injury problems seemingly every season, and 2026 is already shaping up to be another brutal year. The biggest blow is wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, who has reportedly been ruled out for the entire season after suffering a torn PCL that requires right knee surgery.
But Pearsall is far from the only concern.
Star tight end George Kittle is on the active/PUP list while dealing with an Achilles issue. Wide receiver Christian Kirk has been sidelined by a calf strain, while running back Isaac Guerendo is on the PUP list with a pectoral injury. Defensive end Mykel Williams has also landed on the PUP list because of a knee injury.
It’s an absurd list considering we’re still in training camp.
At this point, injuries have become almost as much a part of the 49ers’ identity as winning football games. San Francisco has consistently assembled one of the NFL’s most talented rosters, but keeping that talent on the field has repeatedly been a different story.
It has gotten so ridiculous that there was even an internet conspiracy theory blaming an electrical substation near the 49ers’ practice facility for the team’s recurring injuries. The theory suggested electromagnetic fields could somehow be contributing to the problem, although GM John Lynch and independent testing have dismissed the idea.
Obviously, blaming a substation for football injuries is a massive stretch.
But the fact that such a theory gained attention at all tells you everything about how bizarre San Francisco’s injury history has become. Fans are searching for explanations because it feels like the same story happens every year.
The 49ers can have the talent. They can have the coaching. They can enter another season with championship expectations.
But none of it matters if half the roster ends up watching from the sideline again.
