Happy 71st birthday to two-time Pro Bowler, two-time Super Bowl champion and Super Bowl XXI MVP, Phil Simms!
Simms was the seventh-overall pick of the 1979 NFL Draft, with the New York Giants selecting him after his college career at Morehead State. Simms played in 12 games (starting 11) as a rookie, going 6-5 despite throwing for just 145.3 yards-per-game and 13 touchdowns to 14 interceptions.
After missing most of the next two seasons due to a knee injury, Simms posted his first 4,000-passing-yard season in 1984, made his first Pro Bowl in 1985 and became a Super Bowl champion in 1986. Simms led the Giants past Denver 39-20 by completing 22-of-25 passes with 268 yards and three touchdowns en route to Super Bowl MVP honors.
He got his second Super Bowl ring after leading the Giants to an 11-3 regular season in 1990, but had to watch as backup quarterback Jeff Hostetler and the defense finished the job thanks to Week 15 foot injury.
Simms played three more seasons, retiring after his second Pro Bowl season in 1993 with 33,462 passing yards and 199 touchdowns to his name. Since hanging up his cleats, Simms has remained around the NFL as a broadcaster, working for various networks over the past 33 years.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. An NFL quarterback has thrown for over 500 yards in a game 25 times in league history. How many of the quarterbacks to achieve that feat can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
