As the Cleveland Browns continue their seemingly never-ending search for a franchise quarterback, Baker Mayfield keeps thriving elsewhere.
Two weeks into the season, Mayfield has orchestrated two game-winning drives on the road. He led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 20-19 victory over the Houston Texans on Monday night, steering an 80-yard series in the primetime game's final two minutes.
While Mayfield flourishes in Tampa Bay, Cleveland is 0-2 behind the 40-year-old Joe Flacco. Mayfield's latest heroics caused fans to ridicule the Browns for abandoning the former No. 1 pick to acquire Deshaun Watson three years ago.
"It's so funny how Baker Mayfield is the perfect guy to be the face of the Cleveland Browns and they absolutely screwed it up because he was hurt one year," Scott Pianowski of Yahoo Sports wrote.
"The Browns fumbled Baker Mayfield," a fan declared. "He's clutch."
"Baker Mayfield has more heart than the entire Browns organization," Barstool's Tate Moore claimed.
"Baker Mayfield is incredible. The Browns had the perfect franchise QB and kicked him to the curb," SiriusXM's Bob Stew said. "Bad organizations do bad things."
Mayfield helped the Browns snap a 17-year playoff drought when leading them to an 11-5 record in 2020. The organization finally appeared to find a solution to their quarterback woes, but they pressed reset after Mayfield and the team regressed in 2021.
Before the 2022 season, Cleveland sent a massive haul to Houston for Watson, who was at the time facing numerous civil lawsuits for allegations of sexual misconduct. The Browns gave Watson a fully guaranteed $230 million contract and paid a majority of Mayfield's salary to trade him to the Carolina Panthers for a conditional 2024 draft pick.
The Watson trade and contract will go down as arguably the worst in NFL history. He's posted an anemic 6.0 yards per attempt, and injuries could end his Cleveland career. Watson will miss the entire 2025 season after re-tearing his Achilles tendon for the second time in January.
Then again, the Browns aren't the only organization scratching their heads over Mayfield's renaissance. The former Oklahoma standout had forgettable stints with the Panthers and Los Angeles Rams before taking a prove-it deal with Tampa Bay following Tom Brady's retirement.
Mayfield had never posted a 4,000-yard passing season before doing so in each of the last two years. He topped what appeared to be a breakout 2023 by registering 4,500 passing yards and 41 touchdowns last season.
The 30-year-old continues to prove this performance spike is no fluke, starting the 2025 campaign with five touchdowns, no interceptions, and a 75.4 QBR in two comeback wins. He boasts a 100.6 quarterback rating in 36 regular-season games with the Buccaneers, who are seeking their fifth straight NFC South title.
Mayfield will look to maintain his magical stretch when Tampa Bay hosts the New York Jets in Week 3.
