The Cowboys Are Cutting Ezekiel Elliott On New Year's Eve

Ezekiel Elliott is about to start off 2025 as a free agent. Moments ago, NFL insider Josina Anderson said the Dallas Cowboys released the veteran running back.

Per Anderson's report, Elliott asked for his release. This really isn't a huge surprise. The former No. 4 pick from Ohio State hasn't done much for the Cowboys this season. In early November, the coaching staff made him a healthy inactive because he missed a team meeting just two days before a game. Prior to his fallout in Dallas, he preached the importance of being a good teammate.

"It is definitely a little different, but I mean just to keep my head down, continue to work. Hopefully my opportunity comes," Elliott told reporters. "Just kind of letting it play itself out. Honestly, I've been focused on being a good teammate. I've been focusing on continuing to help lead this team. Not really so much making it about me, just making it about this football team, to win football games."

If Elliott truly asked for his release, it's fair to say he changed his stance on his role with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys have not yet released a statement on Elliott's release. That'll probably happen soon.

Elliott had 226 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries this season. He also hauled in 12 passes for 69 yards.

It's unclear what the market will be like for Elliott at this stage in his career. His days of being an elite playmaker are clearly over. And if he can't accept a backup role, who wants to deal with the headache?

As for the Cowboys, they should feel pretty good about their lead running back in Rico Dowdle. He has over 1,000 rushing yards and four total touchdowns this season. With a better offensive line, he could potentially have an explosive 2025 campaign.
