The Cowboys need to make 3 personnel changes, and Brian Schottenheimer already hinted at one that could happen soon

The Dallas Cowboys are 0-1 after losing the NFL Kickoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles last Thursday. And though it's only one loss, in this league, it's never too early to make adjustments.

That holds particularly true for teams as young as the Cowboys, which is why I think head coach Brian Schottenheimer needs to be thinking about three personnel changes with urgency. The good news is some of them, he's already admittedly thinking about. Let's dive in.

LB Marist Liufau needs to play on defense

There's no question Liufau was one of the biggest preseason standouts in August and with nine career starts under his belt from last year, he looked like a candidate to start for the Cowboys defense this year. But in the opener, he wasn't even a rotational player. He logged a mere six snaps (10% snap count). Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer is already teasing a boost to that count.

"Certainly when we watch film, Marist is earning those rights to play more," Schottenheimer told reporters Friday, via Dallas Morning News' reporter Joe Hoyt.

Linebacker Kenneth Murray played 100% of the snaps, Jack Sanborn went for 76%, and even Damone Clark received 66%. Excluding Sanborn—whose role as middle linebacker should protect him from being benched—the Cowboys linebackers could see their snap count diminish as Liufau keeps showing off his athleticism.

RB Jaydon Blue needs to be active over Miles Sanders

Ninety minutes before gametime, the Cowboys surprised fans when they announced rookie running back Jaydon Blue was a healthy scratch. Following a standout training camp, Blue appeared poised for an important role on offense, especially because he brings the explosiveness and speed that his veteran teammates lack.

Javonte Williams looked good as the offense's RB1 in his Cowboys debut but Sanders' up and down performance should open the door for Blue to play more. Sure, Sanders had a 49-yard gain. However, that big play would have been a touchdown had he not been caught by Eagles linebacker Zach Baun, who was out of the box at the snap. Later, Sanders fumbled.

Keep in mind, Sanders played zero special teams snaps, so activating Blue over him next weekend would be an easy fix. We'll see how quickly the Cowboys react to the RB situation.

Let's give WR Ryan Flournoy a chance

In August, what appeared to be a WR3 battle between Jalen Tolbert and Jonathan Mingo was defined by injury before it was defined by football. With Mingo suffering a PCL injury that eventually landed him on Injured Reserve, Tolbert officially became the team's co-WR3 with KaVontae Turpin. The unofficial depth chart of the team even read "Jalen Tolbert or KaVontae Turpin."

But Tolbert hasn't been good enough to warrant a starting role. As a route runner and receiver he's been inconsistent and even the blocking could be better, as the play below shows.

A potential replacement—or at least, competitor—for Tolbert could be WR Ryan Flournoy. The young receiver was a gameday elevation off of the practice squad in Week 1 but was limited to special teams play. I would like to see the Cowboys shake up the WR room by rotating him into the offense. If not Flournoy, somebody else. But Tolbert should be fighting for his spot moving forward.
