The decline in the San Francisco 49ers' roster depth comes to light after a shocking result in a hypothetical NFL expansion draft

In recent years, the San Francisco 49ers have been praised over and over for having one of the deepest rosters in the NFL.

This offseason, however, they underwent significant changes, and many are now beginning to question whether they have enough depth at this point. Our team here at A to Z Sports recently performed a hypothetical NFL expansion draft, and the results shed light on where things stand for the 49ers heading into the 2025 season.

The 49ers had no players selected in a hypothetical NFL expansion draft

For this hypothetical expansion, each NFL team had to make 12 players unprotected from their current 90-man roster. After using the rules to determine who was eligible, the following players were made unprotected and draft-eligible from the 49ers.

  • Israel Abanikanda, RB
  • Patrick Taylor, RB
  • Russell Gage, WR
  • Brayden Willis, TE
  • Kalia Davis, DT
  • Yetur Gross-Matos, Edge
  • Jonathan Garvin, Edge
  • Curtis Robinson, LB
  • Chazz Surratt, LB
  • Siran Neal, CB
  • Dallis Flowers, CB
  • Greg Joseph, K

In the end, none of the 12 players made available by the 49ers. The two players who had the best shot to be selected were WR Russell Gage and K Greg Joseph. A to Z Sports' Wendell Ferreira ran point on the draft and shared with me that if he had drafted a kicker, Joseph was the top option. But in the end, he elected to sign Eddy Pineiro as a free agent and use his expansion draft selections elsewhere. The 49ers were one of only seven teams not to have a player selected, three of which all came from the NFC West. Along with the 49ers, the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams did not have a player drafted.
