The Tennessee Titans are beginning to prepare for the regular season as they progress toward their second preseason game after a victory over the 49ers in the first game of the three-game slate.
Even though the Titans have figured out their depth chart for multiple positions, one position where a battle continues is right guard.
Fernando Carmona was the star of the show when it comes to the Titans' game against the 49ers. In fact, Carmona was surprisingly the starter for the team. This went against what the unofficial depth chart stated, as Cordell Volson was listed as the starter; however, Carmona had worked with the first team in the final practice before the game. He was able to get some work next to right tackle JC Latham and center Austin Schlottmann. Both players on the right side of the line were brilliant in their performance, as they created plenty of rushing gaps for the running backs.
Carmona had the best performance that he could have had when it comes to the right guard position and now has the inside track, according to head coach Robert Saleh, but the race for the position isn't over. Saleh said the competition still has a ways to go ahead of the game against the Seattle Seahawks, which is set for Sunday at 7 p.m. CDT. This will also be a big game, as it will be the first time that most Titans fans have the chance to see how the rookie operates against an opposing defense in person.
The two other players who are competing for the gig at this time are Jackson Slater, who is the least likely to earn a starting spot, and veteran offensive guard Cordell Volson, who the Titans added from the Cincinnati Bengals during the offseason.
Volson is going to be the main competitor and was the original player that I thought would be the starter for the Titans. However, even in my most recent starting lineup projection, I gave the nod to Carmona, who I believe has done more than enough to earn the starting job.
In my opinion, if Carmona has a similar game against the Seahawks, he should be named the starting right guard even before the Bears game, which will be the final contest of the preseason.
