The Detroit Lions did a little bit of work on quarterbacks this offseason. We know they talked with Jalen Milroe and Seth Hennigan at the NFL Combine, they signed Kyle Allen in free agency, and brought in Eastern Michigan's Cole Snyder for a tryout at the rookie mini-camp.
We're not saying that they're going to jump into looking for a quarterback int he first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, but we are saying that so far, things are not going to well for Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen.
Yes, it's OTAs, and it's not really the time to overreact to things, but the concerns with Hooker at OTAs are the same exact concerns that were had with him last summer.
Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett noted these issues on Friday when local media were in the building to watch.
"Hooker also badly missed an open running back on his second set of four plays in 11-on-11 work. He rolled to his left on the play to avoid pressure — the play likely would have resulted in a sack — and threw across his body over the open running back's head in the middle of the field."
The biggest concern with Hooker last summer as that he was either holding onto the ball too long and taking sacks or he was getting rid of it too fast and throwing picks. It looks like that is still happening at this point.
Birkett also noted that both Hooker and Allen struggled throwing the deep ball. They were consistently overthrowing players.
The preseason is going to be where the decision is made, according to Mark Brunell, and this is going to be a full-on competition. Hooker is not getting the leg up because he's been here and Allen is not getting it because he's been a starter before.
If the Lions get into August and these problems persist, they may need to make some phone calls and see what they can do. For a team that's trying to win a Super Bowl, a premium backup who can come in and help the Lions not miss too much of a beat is very important. Can Hooker or Allen prove that they're that guy? we're going to see.
