The Los Angeles Chargers suffered a massive injury to key offseason addition but should be in good hands following prized rookie's breakout performance

The Los Angeles Chargers stayed perfect on the season with a dramatic last-second field goal to edge the Denver Broncos in Week 3. But the win came at a cost, as starting running back Najee Harris went down with a season-ending Achilles injury.

That means the Chargers will lean even more on their prized rookie, first-round pick Omarion Hampton, who wasted no time proving he’s ready for the spotlight.

A budding star

Thrust into an expanded role against Denver, Hampton carried the ball 19 times for 70 yards and his first NFL touchdown, while also hauling in six receptions for 59 yards. His performance exceeded the box score - every time Hampton touched the ball, his explosiveness jumped off the field. He wasted little time getting north and south, ran with decisiveness and power, and showed the ability to shrug off tacklers and churn out extra yards.

Head coach Jim Harbaugh praised Hampton’s breakout effort after the game, saying the rookie was “running with a purpose” and calling it a gritty, relentless performance.

What stood out most was how Hampton already looks like a true three-down back. He’s not just a physical runner who can handle the dirty work between the tackles - he’s also a weapon in the passing game, with soft hands and the ability to turn short receptions into chunk plays. That versatility gives the Chargers’ offense flexibility when it’s sorely needed.

Hampton was already seeing touches early in the season - logging 15 carries in Week 1 - but Harris’ injury has accelerated his rise to the top of the depth chart. Drafted to be a long-term cornerstone in the backfield, Hampton also finds himself in the present.

The still undefeated Chargers now turn their attention to a Week 4 clash with the New York Giants. With Harris sidelined, Hampton knows the responsibility he carries going forward, saying after the game that he “definitely has to step up.”

The Harris injury is a setback for Los Angeles, but Hampton’s combination of explosiveness, physicality, and all-around skill suggests the backfield may be in good hands.
