Draft week is finally here for the Packers. The NFL offseason is long and drawn out. Last season, this weekend was buzzing as the Packers hosted the draft.
With no first-round pick due to the Micah Parsons trade, the excitement can be a bit dulled. However, there are still plenty of players who can benefit this team right now.
I looked at top draft analysts and Packers’ writers to determine the top three most predicted picks. This is always a week full of players most do not pay attention to. The Packers made plenty of moves in free agency, leaving several gaps that need filled through the draft.
Here are the players that many believe will be a Green Bay Packer by the end of the weekend.
Dani Dennis-Sutton has plenty of upside potential and experience. Coming from Penn State, where Micah Parsons also played. He is an edge rusher; however, he has been much more effective against the run.
There are plenty of things Dennis-Sutton would need to clean up. He has issues with his pad level and drawing penalties. His strengths include taking on contact and always finding a way to the action.
He would be more of a project in year one, which is something the Packers are very familiar with. With another all or nothing season, there are only several projects that the team should take on. Since there is no first round pick, the first three picks are crucial to the result of this year.
The cornerback room is in dire need of a makeover. Julian Neal has the upside and meets more of the thresholds the Packers look for.
While Malik Muhammed might be a more common prediction, Neal seems to be more of a fit. He has the size and is very physical. Neal also is very involved in open-field tackling. This has been a constant issue for the team in seasons past.
The cornerbacks have lacked consistency, but Julian Neal has shown that he is not afraid to tackle after the catch. This is something that is needed and brings a higher level of expectation to the other cornerbacks.
It would not feel like a Packers draft without an offensive lineman. Out of the three players covered, I feel it is less likely that Rutledge will be available and what the Packers go for. Rutledge is a round two prediction, and I am doubtful offensive line is addressed that early.
However, Lance Zierlein’s NFL comparison for Rutledge is none other than current Packers’ center Sean Rhyan. Rutledge has potential to start this season, and with the offensive line blunders last year, you can never have too much help on the line.
The main strength of all three players mentioned above is toughness. The Packers need a bully ball mentality if they want to contend this season. How the draft is addressed this weekend will say everything about what the team will value coming off a disappointing season.
Top Prediction Honorable Mentions: Malik Muhammed, CB, Texas, Domonique Orange, DT, Iowa State, Davison Igbinosun, CB, Ohio State
