As the annual NFL Owners Meeting approaches, the league will be considering proposed rule changes, including some pretty significant ones that can impact overtime across the league.
The latest proposal to be submitted to the NFL comes from the Philadelphia Eagles. Under the proposal, the postseason overtime rule would be applied to the regular season as well.
The postseason overtime rule grants both teams an opportunity to possess the ball regardless of what happens on the first possession. As it stands, a regular season overtime game will end if the opening drive results in a touchdown, with or without the other team getting a chance to touch the ball.
“By Philadelphia; amends Rule 16, Section 1, to align the postseason and regular season overtime rules by granting both teams an opportunity to possess the ball regardless of the outcome of the first possession, subject to a 15-minute overtime period in the regular season," the proposal states, via the New York Post.
It was only a few years ago that the league modified the postseason overtime rule. That was done in response to the thrilling Chiefs-Bills game that saw the shootout between the two teams end without the Bills getting a chance to touch the ball.
The NFL has been trying for ages to tweak and adjust the overtime rules to make it more interesting. The first big change was allowing the second team to get the ball back if the opening drive resulted in a field goal. The second major change was shortening the period to only 10 minutes to mitigate injuries.
This newest proposal could have the benefit of making overtime more competitive and even less contingent on who scores first.

Packers make major position change in hopes of replacing Jaire Alexander
The Green Bay Packers are going to extreme lengths to replace former Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, who was released earlier this spring before signing with the Baltimore Ravens. After trying wide receiver Bo Melton out at cornerback during minicamp practices earlier this summer, the Packers appear to have made that position change official, as training camp gets underway. Packers making Bo Melton a cornerback During the first practice of training camp, Melton, who the Packers originally signed in December 2022, was working with the cornerbacks and had officially changed positions. As the summer kicks into gear, the Packers need to figure out how to add quality depth at cornerback, not just to replace Alexander but also to fill out a depth chart at a position that’s critical in defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley’s scheme. Prior to changing positions, Melton had caught 24 passes, through his first 22 career NFL games, for 309 yards and one touchdown. However, given the influx of young talent at wide receiver and a desperate need at cornerback, head coach Matt LaFleur, Hafley and the Packers clearly believe that the 5-foot-11 and 189-pound former Rutgers standout has a clearer path to the field and adds more value in the secondary than at wide receiver.
Golden State Warriors Predicted to Land $70 Million Sharpshooter in Jonathan Kuminga Trade
The Golden State Warriors have had an underwhelming offseason thus far and the main headline surrounding the franchise remains the future of young forward Jonathan Kuminga. Kuminga remains a restricted free agent and after falling out of Steve Kerr’s rotation last season, his role entering next season is up in the air. Due to this, many believe that Kuminga’s time in Golden State is set to come to an end this offseason but the young forward is still deciding on what his next move will be, which will also be reliant on the Warriors due to them likely having to move him in a sign-and-trade deal. With Kuminga’s time in Golden State likely nearing an end, Sports Illustrated’s Jackson Caudell and Rohan Raman recently came up with a three-team mock trade that would send Kuminga to the Phoenix Suns. In the trade, the Suns would receive Kuminga and Moses from the Warriors and they would send Grayson Allen, Royce O’Neal and an unprotected 2032 first-round pick to Golden State. The Atlanta Hawks are the third team in this mock trade and they would acquire Nick Richards from Phoenix. This would be an interesting move for the Warriors as they would not only be moving on from a young player in Kuminga, but Moses Moody as well. Despite this, adding a sharpshooting guard in Grayson Allen, who also excels on the defensive end, could be a massive boost that the Warriors need. O’Neal would also give the Warriors a solid scorer and defender at the forward position that would allow them to upgrade their bench. By making this move, the Warriors would get older as they would swap two young players for two veterans but the additions of Allen and O’Neal, along with potential free agent signings, could help them compete for a title next season with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler leading the way.
Maple Leafs get unfortunate news about acquiring Flames veteran
The Toronto Maple Leafs continue to explore ways to upgrade the roster following Mitch Marner's departure in free agency. The Leafs front office has been trying to fill in the gaps along the roster, and they have been searching on the trade front. One name that has been heavily connected to the Maple Leafs in recent weeks is Calgary Flames star Nazem Kadri. Kadri could replace Marner very well in the lineup, but it seems that a deal could be complicated to complete. According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos of SportsNet, Toronto has tried to land Kadri multiple times this summer, only to be rebuffed each time. Kypreos believes that a deal involving Kadri returning to the Maple Leafs could be unlikely at this point in the summer. Last season, Kadri posted 35 goals and 32 assists for the Flames. His presence has been steady on the ice for years, and Calgary could probably get a lot on the trade market for him. The Maple Leafs will likely continue to explore ways to pry Kadri from the Flames. But Calgary likely won't trade him unless it receives an offer that it deems too good to be true. But Kadri is the leader of this team, and he was the best player for them last season. Toronto doesn't have a lot of tradable assets to work with, which could be what is holding things up between the two sides. The veteran could give Toronto a nice boost, but unless the Maple Leafs up the offer, he isn't returning to town.
Ex-Raiders Head Coach Antonio Pierce Lands First Job Since Firing
Antonio Pierce appeared to have a very bright future in coaching after he took over as the interim head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023, following Josh McDaniels getting fired. He led the team to a 5-4 record, which helped him earn interviews for head coaching jobs around the NFL before he officially landed the Raiders gig. However, his first season as the full-time head coach was a disaster. The team finished 4-13, and the players weren't pounding the table for him nearly as loudly. He was fired and replaced with Pete Carroll. Despite his success as a linebackers coach and previous promise as a head coach, no team hired Pierce to be a part of their coaching staff for the 2025 season. That has led to him taking on a different job. Pierce announced on Instagram that he has been named Chief Strategy Advisor for a company called Athletes in Control. Notably, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels recently joined the company as a brand ambassador. Pierce and Daniels have a close relationship from their time at Arizona State. It's not entirely clear what Athletes in Control does. Their website is currently password-protected. Their Instagram bio mentions "NIL to HOF," so it's possible that they are some sort of agency that helps athletes secure brand deals. Regardless, Pierce is going to stay close to football with this new gig. It remains to be seen if it'll keep him from wanting to return to the coaching ranks sometime in the future.
