Changes had to be made after a lackluster performance in the team's first preseason game against the New England Patriots, and the Washington Commanders made multiple moves on Thursday.

The team's depth seemed to be a major issue heading into week two of the preseason, and they have brought in extra support to impress with roster cuts coming at the end of the month.

Extra help in the secondary

The Commanders' defense is the key focus as it was the obvious weak point of the team last season, and there are a lot of new and moving pieces to watch. One glaring issue from the first preseason game was the lack of depth in the secondary as the Patriots moved the ball down the field with ease.

The team worked out four defensive backs on Wednesday and decided to sign safety Daryl Worley following his tryout with the team.

Worley was a third-round pick back in 2016, and he's bounced around several different teams, but most recently spent last season with the Tennessee Titans, where he played 460 snaps on defense. He had a season high of 11 tackles against the Commanders last season.

The safety room has a lot of bodies currently, and I'm not sure what the pathway to the roster looks like for Worley. I don't see the team keeping more than five safeties, and Percy Butler, Jeremy Reaves, and Tyler Owens have the upper hand. This is likely a chance for him to compete in the preseason, so the Commanders don't have to use the current roster locks as much as possible.

Movement in the wide receiver room

The secondary wasn't the only depth concern from the first preseason game, as the wide receiver room was another hot topic following a disappointing showing. The Commanders decided to release Mike Strachan and bring in River Cracraft.

Cracraft spent two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2020 and 2021 when Adam Peters was still there, and he most recently played the last three seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He collected 25 catches with the Dolphins for 289 yards and three touchdowns.

This isn't the flashiest signing, but it gives a veteran a chance to compete in a wide receiver room that needs somebody to stand out in the last two games with Terry McLaurin absent, other than Ja'Corey Brooks.

The Commanders started making moves immediately after the first preseason game when they released recent fifth-round pick Dominique Hampton, and the team has shown that they aren't afraid to make more changes before the season starts.
