These Chiefs veterans are staring down one final shot to make the roster

The Chiefs and the rest of the NFL have one last preseason game to complete before the contests count for real. But for many players, this final preseason game will be the last opportunity to prove they belong on the roster for Week 1. That includes veterans and younger long shots alike.

Due to training camp battles and early preseason results, a few veteran names are facing pressure on the Chiefs. Which names could need a major performance to stick on the roster? Here are three players who may be facing one final chance to remain in Kansas City.

RB Elijah Mitchell

Elijah Mitchell was not a huge investment this offseason, signing a cheap one-year deal in free agency. However, Kansas City was likely hoping for more substance from him at this point in the preseason.

Overall, Mitchell has lacked the explosiveness and burst the team was likely anticipating. Some of that may have been expected after past injuries in his career. Still, those elements would have been difference-makers for him personally to make the team in this current running back room. Too many of his runs have been inefficient and ineffective.

Battling for the RB3 spot at best, Mitchell is clearly on the bubble as this last preseason game approaches. We have seen other running backs have better preseasons and still not land a depth role in Kansas City. Can Mitchell turn his fortunes around?

CB Joshua Williams

Joshua Williams notably played well into the second half of the second preseason game against Seattle. The Chiefs know what he can add in terms of length on the outside. However, his inconsistent style when given opportunities to make a play on the football is too erratic.

Can Williams show that his defensive technique is enough to stick in the cornerback room? That has been a major sticking point for him since entering the league. He can play press at the line of scrimmage, yet Williams is still a bit unrefined as a player entering the last yea r of his rookie deal. If his defensive strategies stand out, his special teams ability will aid his chances of remaining on the roster.

DT Jerry Tillery

Jerry Tillery has had some ups and downs in terms of consistent technique and body control. That does not just include his training camp and preseason this year with the Chiefs. His last couple of stops around the NFL have also displayed how incomplete Tillery has been up front.

It is not that deep of a defensive tackle room in Kansas City. The Chiefs could easily need more depth there to open the regular season. But with the lack of buzz created by Tillery , K.C. may be looking at an outside addition or two after final roster cuts. If Tillery does not stand out in the final preseason game, the Chiefs will be walking on thin ice at the position behind Chris Jones.
