Three most overrated Eagles for 2025

As their 2024 Super Bowl championship will attest, the Philadelphia Eagles are loaded with talent, even if some players get more credit than they deserve. Here's a look at three overrated Eagles.

LB | Zack Baun

Without a doubt, Philadelphia’s 28-year-old linebacker had an incredible 2024 season, earning his first All-Pro nomination and being named as a candidate for the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award.

He also received a three-year, $54M contract from the Eagles, but in a fickle city like Philadelphia, he’ll be considered a “one-year wonder” without another strong performance.

Baun set career-marks with 151 tackles (93 solo), five forced fumbles and 3.5 sacks last season, clearly the best of his five-year career. A third-round pick of New Orleans in 2020, Baun was used primarily on special teams, posting 88 tackles and two sacks in four years with the Saints.

Philadelphia had similar plans for the off-ball linebacker until new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio asked him to move inside during an early spring practice. The results speak for themselves, but it’s fair to wonder how the Saints could have missed out on such a talented player.

Maybe they didn’t and last season was an outlier in an otherwise unremarkable career. Either way, the NFL’s 13th-highest paid linebacker will look to remove all doubt in 2025.

TE | Dallas Goedert

While never considered on the level of the Chiefs’ Travis Kelce or San Francisco’s George Kittle, many see Goedert as one of the NFL’s most talented tight ends, when healthy.

Goedert missed seven games in 2024, three in 2023 and five in 2022. Over the past seven years, he’s played just one full season, as a rookie in 2018. He had 42 catches for 496 yards and a career-low two touchdowns last season, after which the team gave their 30-year-old tight end permission to seek a trade.

With no takers, Goedert and the Eagles agreed to a restructured deal that will pay him $10M next season as opposed to the $14M he was scheduled to make. If he stays healthy, he’ll earn every penny. If not, most will consider him overrated.

QB | Jalen Hurts

A funny thing happened on the way to winning Super Bowl LIX. After an uninspired 2-2 start to the regular season, Philadelphia came out of its Week 5 bye determined to get the ball out of Hurts’ hands.

In the Eagles’ first four games, the quarterback averaged 33 attempts per game, throwing no less than 30 passes in any contest. Over the next 10 games (all wins), Hurts averaged 22.5 attempts per game, throwing 30 or more passes just once against the Steelers in Week 15.

Meanwhile, running back Saquon Barkley saw his average carries per game jump from 18.2 to 25.0 after the team’s bye. Some of that can be attributed to his pursuit of Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record of 2,105 yards, although Philadelphia did shut him down for a meaningless regular-season finale against the Giants.

To be fair, Hurts outplayed Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, widely seen as the NFL’s best quarterback, in two Super Bowl appearances, but those who think he’s better than Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Buffalo’s Josh Allen or even Mahomes are sorely mistaken.
