Three offseason moves the Packers must make

The Packers have had an eventful offseason, adding safety Xavier McKinney and running back Josh Jacobs to an already-budding roster. However, with the big moves likely over and the NFL Draft in the rearview, there are still areas that could use improvement.

With that in mind, here are three offseason moves the Packers should consider before the start of training camp.

Sign a cornerback: The Packers have plenty of depth at cornerback, but experience? Not so much.

Beyond two-time Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander, Green Bay is counting on Eric Stokes, Carrington Valentine and Corey Ballentine. Stokes, a 2021 first-round pick, hasn't lived up to the hype, playing in only three games in 2023 due to a hamstring injury. Valentine was thrust into a more significant role despite being a rookie seventh-round pick, but he played solidly, allowing a 57.6 completion percentage over 12 starts. Meanwhile, Ballentine, a journeyman, has made only 10 starts in five NFL seasons, six of which came last season.

Former Penn State cornerback Kalen King, selected in the seventh round of the 2024 draft, might boost this year's unit. However, if Alexander, limited to only seven games in 2023 due to a suspension and a shoulder injury, misses more time, leaning on the group as currently constructed could create problems in the secondary.

Sign a veteran WR: Since 2022, the Packers have selected six wide receivers in the NFL Draft. So far, it's paid dividends, but heading into the 2024 campaign, beyond Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs, entering their third pro seasons, Green Bay's depth chart consists of only second-year wideouts, including Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton and Malik Heath.

While productive during his rookie year in 2022, Watson had his 2023 season cut short after suffering a hamstring injury in Week 12. Doubs (59 receptions, 674 yards) and Reed (64 receptions, 793 yards) picked up the slack, recording eight touchdowns apiece. Meanwhile, Wicks, a fifth-round pick in 2023, surprised a bit, finishing the year with 39 receptions for 581 yards and four scores.

The Packers seem to have an embarrassment of riches at wideout, but with injuries always a concern, experience may also be a factor. That's why inking a solid, reliable veteran to provide depth or push the team's young core would be wise for Green Bay. No game-changers remain on the market, but someone like Russell Gage or DeAndre Carter might fit the bill.

Add offensive line depth: The Packers offensive line saw plenty of change this offseason, which has created question marks at a few positions.

With David Bakhtiari and Jon Runyan out, first-round pick Jordan Morgan will have big shoes to fill at left tackle, while Sean Rhyan moves up from a backup role to starting right guard. Meanwhile, competition is lacking at center, with rookie fifth-round pick Jacob Monk currently backing up Josh Myers, who Pro Football Focus graded 26th (55.8) out of 32 centers in 2023.

Protecting quarterback Jordan Love is paramount if the Packers expect to take another leap forward after last year's surprising success. The current group doesn't need an overhaul, but adding a versatile veteran with experience can only help.
