Former Detroit Lions backup quarterback Tim Boyle has been waived by the Tennessee Titans. Boyle has spent the last year with three other NFL franchises, including the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and the New York Giants.
He appeared in two games with the Dolphins and one with the Giants, throwing for 276 yards, one touchdown, and an interception, while completing 54 percent of his passes.
Boyle has been with the Titans since March and appeared in the 29-7 preseason loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Saturday, throwing for 24 yards and two interceptions on 4-of-13 passing. The Titans signed veteran quarterback Trevor Siemian as Boyle's replacement, where he is expected to play third string behind No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward and Brandon Allen.
Many Lions fans remember Tim Boyle as the backup quarterback to Jared Goff in Dan Campbell's first year as head coach for Detroit in 2021. The Lions finished the 2021 season with the worst record in the NFC at 3-13-1.
Boyle played in five games for the Lions that season, recording 526 passing yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions. Boyle appeared as a starter in three of those five games with the Lions; Detroit lost all three matchups.
After the conclusion of the 2021 season, Boyle signed a one-year extension with the Lions, but was cut after training camp in 2022, before re-signing to Detroit's practice squad. The Chicago Bears would sign Boyle off Detroit's practice squad in November of 2022, and he played in one game that season, recording 33 passing yards and two interceptions.
Boyle also played two seasons with the Green Bay Packers from 2019 to 2020 and appeared in three games with the New York Jets in 2023, recording 360 yards, one touchdown, and four interceptions. Turnovers have always been an issue for Boyle throughout his career in the NFL.
With Boyle now released by the Titans, he will wait for his next opportunity in what has been a six-year career in the league with eight NFL teams. The Lions haven't shown any interest in signing Boyle back to their roster.
The Lions are in a bit of a pickle with their quarterback depth at the moment, with all signs pointing to Hendon Hooker sliding down the depth chart. Boyle has just experienced what could be Hooker's fate with Detroit if he can't piece together two more solid preseason performances.
