Todd Bowles Calls Out Rueben Bain Jr. After Quiet Start

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Rueben Bain Jr. with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the expectation wasn’t for him to just be another guy on the defensive line. The expectation was for him to take over the unit and be the cornerstone player for the future.

Through two games so far, Bain Jr. has yet to show any reassurance that the Buccaneers made the right pick. After Tampa Bay’s Week 2 loss to the Cleveland Browns, head coach Todd Bowles made sure to acknowledge Bain’s slow start.

“I don’t think he’s completely healthy, but at the same time, he’s good enough to play, so we’ve got to get more production there,” Bowles ended up saying when referring to Bain’s lack of production.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Need Rueben Bain Jr. to Make an Impact

Through the first two games of the season, Bain has recorded only one tackle with no sacks, quarterback hits, or forced fumbles. While there is the injury context surrounding this slow start, as Bain suffered an AC joint sprain in August during a joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars, it makes it a bit more reasonable as to why he hasn’t produced, but it still doesn’t eliminate the pressure surrounding him.

Tampa Bay drafted him to be an immediate difference-maker following his 9.5-sack season he had in 2025 with Miami. With the Buccaneers sitting with an 0-2 record, they need Bain to find his motor and advanced hand usage to make an impact and start translating if they wish to avoid a further worse stretch to start the season.
