The Cleveland Browns will enter Week 1 with Deshaun Watson starting at quarterback and rookie Shedeur Sanders serving as his backup for Sunday’s road matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

After announcing earlier this week that Sanders will be active as the QB2 behind Watson, Browns coach Todd Monken acknowledged Friday that Cleveland could dress three quarterbacks.

According to Browns beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot, Monken also hinted at creating a specialized package for rookie signal caller Taylen Green.

“Todd Monken acknowledged that he could possibly have 3 QBs active on Sunday if he decides to give rookie Taylen Green a package of plays,” Cabot reported.

The Browns carried Watson, Sanders and Green on their initial 53-man roster after placing fellow quarterback Dillon Gabriel on injured reserve with a back injury.

Green, a sixth-round rookie, could add a different dimension to the Browns with his mobility. He completed five of seven passes for 27 yards during Cleveland’s preseason finale while adding a game-high 66 rushing yards on eight carries.

However, Monken has not committed to activating Green against Jacksonville, with Cleveland weighing the potential benefits of handing him a specialized role against using that game-day roster spot elsewhere.

“If we could afford it, it’d be nice to have five or six quarterbacks up,” Monken said. “But three is a lot.”

Monken confirmed Sanders’ status on Wednesday when asked whether the rookie would be active as Watson’s backup, simply answering, “I do.”

If the Browns dress all three quarterbacks, Sanders would remain Watson’s primary backup while giving Cleveland the option of using Green for select plays designed around his athleticism.

The Browns aren’t expected to reveal their game-day quarterback plan until game day when they visit the Jaguars on Sunday, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET at EverBank Stadium.
