There’s something about an undefeated football team that makes people start wondering just how far it can go. The San Francisco 49ers are 6–0 after beating Washington 23–17, and Tom Brady isn’t waiting for the perfect moment to give them some credit. He still has San Francisco at No. 1 in his weekly NFL power rankings, ahead of the other undefeated teams.
That’s interesting, but what caught my attention was Brady’s explanation. With injuries piling up, he expected the 49ers to face a tougher road. Instead, they’ve kept winning. Brady called it a “next man up mentality,” and that might tell us more about this team than the unbeaten record alone.
Every good NFL team needs talent. The trick is keeping things together when some of that talent isn’t available. San Francisco has managed to do that so far, and Brady believes the team’s response to adversity bodes well as the season gets tougher.
That’s where an undefeated start can be misleading. Six wins don’t guarantee anything in January, and eventually every team faces a stretch when the schedule gets harder, and mistakes cost more. What matters is whether a team can keep finding answers when Plan A isn’t available.
The 49ers have given their fans reason to believe they can. Now comes the challenge of doing it consistently, rather than simply enjoying a terrific opening month.
Brady also praised quarterback Brock Purdy, calling him an MVP candidate and highlighting his ability to distribute the ball, extend plays, and use his legs when necessary. That’s an important combination. A quarterback doesn’t always need to make the spectacular throw. Sometimes the best play is recognizing what’s available, getting the ball to the right teammate and keeping the offence moving. Other times, the defence takes away the obvious option, and a quarterback has to create something himself.
Brady’s comments suggest he sees Purdy handling both sides of that job. For San Francisco, that’s encouraging. A team can have excellent players around its quarterback, but it still needs someone who can manage situations and make good decisions when the game gets tight.
The 49ers head to Atlanta next, with a chance to reach 7–0 before their bye week. That’s a terrific opportunity, but the bigger question is what happens when the inevitable difficult stretch arrives. Brady has seen enough to put San Francisco at the top of his rankings. The 49ers haven’t just won games; they’ve kept finding ways to win despite injuries.
For their fans, that’s reason to be optimistic. An undefeated record is exciting, but a team’s ability to handle adversity may be what makes it a genuine contender. San Francisco is off to a wonderful start. Now it has to show it can keep answering the bell.
