When Tom Brady pulled double duty as minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and broadcaster for Fox, it raised questions about a potential conflict of interest.
That is why the NFL placed restrictions on what Brady could do in his first season. Brady could not head to team facilities, attend practices or be a part of Fox’s pregame production meetings during the week, forcing him to take alternate methods to prepare for his assignments. Some restrictions have been lifted for this season, however, so Brady can now do more in his role with Fox.
With Brady settling in to his dual role, he took the time to answer any questions about what his new duties entail.
During an interview with NBC color commentator Cris Collinsworth, Brady talked about why there should be no issue with him being able to attend production meetings or meet with teams before games.
“I think me asking questions in a production meeting is no different than a media member asking a question in a weekly press conference. They’re going to answer it the same way. So, it’s nice for my crew to have me involved because I think, as a cohesive unit, what we’re trying to do, that’s going to be a real positive,” Brady said.
Despite Brady’s promises, the concerns about giving the Raiders a potential competitive advantage are not entirely invalid.
Brady was already under intense scrutiny as a broadcaster, particularly when he was calling the NFC Divisonal playoff game between the Detroit Lions and Washington Commanders while the Raiders were in pursuit of then-Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as head coach. Having more access to key information gives more chances for potential leaks, but Brady has shown nothing during his first season on the job that that will be a problem. Brady does have a point that what he now has the opportunity to do is a major part of preparation, so being able to do so will help him immensely.
It will be intriguing to see how Brady’s new prep work will improve his performance from last season to this one.
