What happens in the preseason stays in the preseason, but one can't blame New York Giants fans for feeling pumped up about their team after Tommy DeVito and company defeated the visiting New England Patriots on Thursday night at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
DeVito, who was born in New Jersey, put up a scintillating performance against the Pats, as he lit up New England's defense for three passing touchdowns in the Giants' 42-10 victory. With that win, the Giants finished their preseason duty with a perfect 3-0 record. They beat the Buffalo Bills on the road in Week 1 and the New York Jets at home in Week 2.
While a lot of focus in the Giants' quarterback room has been given to offseason addition Russell Wilson and rookie Jaxson Dart via the 2025 NFL draft, New York supporters showed their admiration for DeVito during the Patriots game. DeVito even got an ovation from the crowd.
"It means a lot," DeVito told the media during the postgame press conference, as seen in a video shared by Giants Videos.
"Like you said, just the motivation, like that's stuff for Jersey. If I was in the stands, I'd be cheering for anybody who's the hometown kid, too, so it was appreciated. You know, just to go out and execute. Obviously, there are still things to clean up, but like I said, it felt good getting some time with two whole quarters to go out to pl ay and just feel the energy, excitement, and love for the game."
There is a possibility that DeVito, who threw for 198 yards with zero interceptions on 17-of-20 pass completions versus the Patriots, might have already played his last game in a Giants uniform.
DeVito still has a year left on his current contract, but with Wilson, Dart and former Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston in the mix, the former Illinois Fighting Illini quarterback could be the odd man out, which puts his future past the final 53-man ros ter cuts in question.
Whether he makes the final cut or not, DeVito will always be appreciative of his time with the Giants, who signed him in 2023 after he went undrafted in that year's NFL draft.
"Tommy DeVito said that if today was his last game as a Giant ahead of cut day Tuesday, he’ll remember it well," as reported by Evan Barnes of Newsday Sports.
DeVito has become a cult hero of sorts for Giants fans for his unlikely rise during his rookie season.
With both starter Daniel Jones and chief backup QB Tyrod Taylor injured, DeVito was tapped by New York to start, leading his team to three wins. In nine appearances in 2023, including six starts, he accumulated 1,101 passing yards and eight touchdowns against three interceptions, while also rushing for 195 yards and a score on 35 carries.
If the 27-year-old DeVito gets cut by the Giants, it shouldn’t be the end of his story in the NFL. Teams looking for depth and insurance in the most important position in football will likely give him at least a look.
