The idea of trading Chris Olave does not indicate anything about his talent, and this is not a move you should make if you’re unable to get a good offer. However, in fantasy football, some of your league mates are only willing to make a trade if there’s a star player involved for them, which Olave is.
Heading into the year, Olave was drafted as the WR12, and right now he’s more than outplaying that. Olave currently is averaging 18.8 PPG through the first 6 weeks. In PPR leagues, that makes him the WR7 in terms of PPG.
With that being said, I’m starting to get slightly concerned with Olave over the last two weeks, combined with the potential of a Jordyn Tyson return very soon.
The idea of trading Olave comes down to the fact that I’m not sure he’s going to be able to sustain this kind of production. If you can trade down to Malik Nabers, Drake London, or Garrett Wilson with another quality starter attached, that’s a move I’d look to make.
My biggest concern is with Tyler Shough, who has really struggled over the last two weeks. Shough has thrown for less than 150 yards in both weeks, and the New Orleans Saints just aren’t throwing the ball a ton in these matchups.
In Weeks 1-4, Shough threw the ball at least 42 times in 3 of those 4 games, which was an unsustainable pace. Over the last two, Shough hasn’t thrown over 30 times once. The targets have still been strong for Olave, but it’s dipped from 10 or more in Weeks 1-4 to six and seven in Weeks 5-6.
Shough is also playing through an injury right now, which concerns me. According to an article from Adam Schefter on ESPN posted on October 18th, “quarterback Tyler Shough has been playing with two broken bones in his left hand, sources told ESPN.”
As for Tyson, Schefter wrote this on October 5th, “Saints are taking a patient, long-term approach with Tyson, who is not likely to return until Week 7 at the earliest, according to league sources…With the bye in Week 8, a potential Week 9 return might be the most logical course of action…”
Tyson is a very talented wide receiver, and we can’t ignore the fact that he was the eighth overall pick despite having injury concerns coming out of Arizona State. Tyson was an elite prospect based on my evaluation, and unless Shough is throwing the ball a ton, I expect him to cut into Olave’s target share.
There’s still time to move on from Olave in fantasy football, but it’s a good move to get ahead of the curve.
