Travis Kelce Cracks Up Laughing Over Chiefs Play That Cost Gamblers on 'Bad Beat'
USA TODAY Sports

If you were one of the many gamblers who was sitting on a Chiefs bet on Saturday afternoon, fully expecting that a well-earned covered spread was in hand when Kansas City held a 23-12 lead with 15 seconds to play, you learned the hard way what a “bad beat” is.

That’s when some unforeseen late-game twist, often meaningless to the result of the game, changes the point-spread and costs you a win. And when punter Matt Araiza decided to scamper 18 yards into the end zone for a safety on the Chiefs’ final play, rather than punt the ball, the bad beat became a reality at Arrowhead.

The most common spread heading into the game was 9.5 points. Araiza’s move helped secure the Chiefs’ win, but it also made the score 23-14, meaning that quite suddenly, the Texans had covered that spread. It made no difference to Kansas City in its march to the AFC championship game, but that does not mean they were unaware of the situation.

On Wednesday’s edition of “New Heights,” the podcast that Chiefs star Travis Kelce does with his brother, Jason Kelce, that topic came up, and Travis Kelce was hardly able to contain his laughter.

“We had a legit ‘bad beat’ … That is as bad of a beat as you can think of,” Travis Kelce said, laughing. “A safety with 40 seconds left in the game. Just to go to the other side of the spread. Hilarious.”

It was, indeed, hilarious—if you picked the Texans, at least.
