It is far from rare for a university to receive a substantial donation, but that is less than normal at the high school level. On Friday, a high school in Philadelphia received a donation that would make most universities jealous.

St. Joseph’s Prep was founded in 1851 and is a private, all-boys Catholic Jesuit school. It has also established a successful football program that has produced numerous famous alumni. Some of these include Rich Gannon (1983), Kevin Stefanski (2000), Jon Runyan (2015), De’Andre Swift (2017) and Marvin Harrison Jr. (2021).

While Oregon has received a $2B donation from Phil and Penny Knight, and academic universities like Harvard, Cornell and Johns Hopkins have had numerous $100M+ donations, receiving $74M is still unique territory. While schools like South Carolina, Wisconsin, Utah and Boston College have received similar amounts in recent years, for most it would be cause for a celebration.

As for the donator, here is the story on Nick Howley. He gradated from St. Joseph’s Prep and Drexel and then became the co-founder and chairman of TransDigm Group, one of the world’s largest aerospace companies with an enterprise value of $100 billion. According to Forbes, he is currently worth $2B.

It will be interesting to see what St. Joseph’s Prep does with its new 74 million dollars.
