Two Head Coach Candidates Reportedly Turn Down Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns have not yet hired a head coach for the 2026 season, and judging by the latest report, it could be a while before they finally make a move.

Despite being a two-time Coach of the Year with the Browns, Kevin Stefanski was fired after the 2025 regular season came to an end. Although they've had weeks to figure out who'll replace him, a favorite for the job hasn't emerged yet. To make matters worse, it doesn't sound like they've even complied with the Rooney Rule.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was supposed to have an in-person interview with the Browns this week. He ultimately withdrew from their search before even having that face-to-face meeting.

McDaniel is currently set to become the offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers. His plans could change if the Buffalo Bills offer him their head coaching job.

As for the Browns, it's being reported that McDaniel isn't the only coach who turned them down this week.

According to Anthony Lima of Cleveland 92.3 The Fan, the Browns reached out to Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula. He apparently told them "No thanks" at this time.

"I think the Browns have had more rejections than interviews conducted so far," Lima sarcastically said. "Andy Berry is doing a stellar job, as expected."

Who will the Browns hire?

According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Browns are set to host Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski for an interview this Friday. They also want to speak with Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase.

"The expectation as of now is Cleveland goes into next week with the search and definitely wants to speak with Rams assistant Nate Scheelhaase," Fowler said. "But Udinski has his chance to impress in-person."

If the Browns are impressed by either Scheelhaase or Udinski, they could end up getting the job.
