Running back Tyjae Spears was carted off the field on Saturday night in a 29-7 preseason loss by the Tennessee Titans at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Spears, who struggled with multiple injuries in 2024, will likely miss the remainder of the preseason with an ankle injury he sustained in the second quarter.
It is another frustrating setback for the promising, young Tennessee skill player.
Spears caught a pass from Titans back-up quarterback Brandon Allen on 3rd-and-15.
Spears took the reception for 13 yards, before going down grabbing his right ankle. The 2023 third-round pick limped off the field before he was carted into the locker room. Spears left Tennessee's postgame locker room on crutches with a walking boot on the injured leg.
"(Tyjae) Spears is expected to probably miss some time here, a couple of weeks at least," said coach Brian Callahan. "We'll see, we're waiting on some final words on a few things, but he will definitely miss some time."
The Titans open their regular season on the road against the Denver Broncos on September 7.
Callahan declined to say whether or not the timeline for Spears could have him ready for Week 1. It is particularly disappointing for Spears, who should be a versatile piece in the Callahan's offense as a supplement to veteran back Tony Pollard. Spears just has not been able to stay available.
After a promising rookie season where he appeared in all 17 games, Spears was limited to 12 appearances last year due to an ankle sprain, a hamstring injury and two concussions.
Behind Spears on the depth chart are backs Julius Chestnut, Kalel Mullings, Jermar Jefferson, and Jordan Mims. Mullings got the most work against the Bucs on Saturday night, carrying seven times for 33 yards. Both the fourth-year veteran Chestnut and Mullings, a 2025 sixth-round pick, provided special teams value in addition to their offensive abilities.
Tennessee will have two joint preseason practices this week against the Falcons in Atlanta before their second preseason game this Friday.
