Tyler Huntley Joins the Cleveland Browns Amid Injury Issues
- Miami Dolphins quarterback Tyler Huntley (18) throws a pass, Sunday January 5, 2025, in East Rutherford.

If you are a Cleveland Browns fan, you are hopeful that Tyler Huntley’s return might stabilize the team’s quarterback chaos, or “another quarterback” feels like the Browns’ unofficial motto at this point.

What’s Going Down In Cleveland?

Here’s the situation. The Browns are in quarterback purgatory right now. With injuries taking their toll on what was already a crowded QB room, Tyler Huntley has been signed to provide some much-needed depth. Here’s a snapshot of their current situation:

  • Kenny Pickett is nursing a hamstring injury and hasn’t fully practiced since July 26. He’s trying to push through but is clearly not at 100%.
  • Shedeur Sanders had arm soreness and only returned to full practice on Monday.
  • Dillon Gabriel, another young QB hopeful, continues to deal with hamstring tightness, leaving his preseason readiness up in the air.
  • Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson, not even in the conversation for 2025, is sidelined with an Achilles injury.

That leaves Joe Flacco. The 40-year-old veteran is holding down the fort for now, but Huntley stepping in gives the Browns a barely breathing chance of making it through the preseason without imploding. Or does it?

Who is Tyler Huntley?

Huntley, 27, is far from being a household name, unless your household happens to be in his hometown. He made a brief splash as a backup for Lamar Jackson on the Baltimore Ravens, which included 10 starts and one playoff appearance. And hey, in 2022, he even nabbed a Pro Bowl selection.

More recently, Huntley had a short stint with the Miami Dolphins, starting in five games during the 2024 season. Despite a respectable 64.7% completion rate, his three touchdowns were matched by three interceptions, and the Dolphins went 2-3 during his starts.

The Browns’ Endless QB Dilemma

Adding Huntley to the mix raises one big question. Is Cleveland falling into its own bad habits of cycling through quarterbacks like it’s a fantasy league draft? While Cleveland still hasn’t finalized its long-term plans for Huntley, it is another chapter in the team’s ongoing “How Do We Find Stability at Quarterback” drama.

Huntley’s track record shows us some flashes of brilliance, but those flashes too often get overshadowed by his mistakes. A 10-interception performance over 10 career starts isn’t exactly the stat line of someone who’s going to waltz in and turn things around.

The Preseason Stakes

The clock’s ticking with Cleveland heading into their preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers on Friday. Huntley will have only four days to get acclimated, learn the playbook, and attempt not to fumble away any hope for a productive training camp. Browns fans, prepare yourselves for another rollercoaster. The ride might already be leaving the station.
