Tyreek Hill was looking to bounce back from a rather mediocre 2024 season with the Miami Dolphins — at least by his very high standards. The five-time All-Pro wide receiver was not named as a Pro Bowler last season for the first time in his nine years in the NFL. Hill finished the campaign with 81 catches for 959 yards and six touchdowns.
Hill was beginning to heat up this season. In his first four games, the 31-year-old had already registered 21 receptions for 265 yards and one TD. However, disaster struck in Miami’s Week 4 win against the New York Jets.
Hill was forced to exit in the third quarter of that game after a tackle on the sideline. He had to be carted off the field and was ruled out almost immediately after the gruesome knee injury. The former Kansas City Chiefs star was later diagnosed with multiple ligament tears, including his left ACL. He underwent season-ending surgery on Sept. 30.
Hill went on former teammate Terron Armstead’s “The Set” podcast on Thursday. One of the toughest questions he faced was about all the chatter surrounding his future in the NFL. It was at that point that the Dolphins star shared his brutally honest thoughts on his potential retirement.
"At the end of the day, I feel like that decision is all based upon how I feel and where my mindset is at the moment,” Hill said. “Right now, I'm happy with being with my kids. I'm happy with the career that I've had, and I love playing football. I love it. But it takes a lot. … To be the best and to stay at the top. … It takes a lot on you mentally. It takes a lot on you physically.”
Hill did not directly say he’s considering retirement, but he didn't rule it out either. He made it clear, however, that he is not ready to make a decision now, just three weeks into his rehab.
“I'm at the point now where I need to have a conversation with Mom, family, everybody,” he continued. “Like I said, wherever my mind is at the time, the decision to be made, but I just know right now, I feel like I haven't had time to just live in the moment, and just be in the moment with my family.
"I think that's the appropriate answer for something like that. I don't want to make any rash decisions."
Hill is still under contract with the Dolphins through 2026. He signed a three-year, $90 million extension with the team in 2024.
As for the Dolphins, they are currently 1-6 on the season and are in the midst of a three-game losing streak. They will be back in action on Sunday in a road game against the Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff from Mercedes-Benz Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
