Typically, when a rookie gets a "welcome to the NFL" moment, it's from another player laying a big hit on them. Sometimes, it comes verbally, which can be just as painful if the player on the receiving end of that is an undrafted rookie trying to make the team.
Bleeding Green Nation's Brandon Lee Gowton gave his report on Philadelphia Eagles training camp on Tuesday, where he shared a tough moment for undrafted rookie running back ShunDerrick Powell, who took an earful from head coach Nick Sirianni after messing up on the play.
"Nick Sirianni was not very happy after a rep where DTR threw a pass in the flat to … nobody. He really chewed out undrafted rookie running back ShunDerrick Powell for messing up his assignment."
This is the professionals. Tough coaching is part of the deal, and Powell is still learning after just playing one game in the midnight green uniforms, but every rep counts in training camp when a roster spot is on the line.
Powell showed what he can do in the Eagles' 34-27 preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals last week with a nice performance. Playing in the second half of the game, Powell finished with six carries for 32 yards and a touchdown with an average of 5.3 yards per carry—a nice start for the rookie.
The former Central Arkansas running back still has a steep hill to climb as he tries to make an argument for the Eagles to carry four running backs on the roster. Ahead of him right now are Saquon Barkley, Will Shipley, and A.J. Dillon. Another back in the competition with Powell is Keilan Robinson, who averaged just two yards a carry on 12 touches in the Bengals game.
Sometimes, it's a good sign that a coach is going after a player because they can see the potential in them. It's those players who make mistakes and don't get yelled at who can count themselves off the team.
Powell has a lot of talent and is quick on his feet. It's clear he's got what it takes to compete in the NFL. He just needs to make sure that he doesn't make the same mistake twice, or it could be worse than the head coach yelling at him.
