Updated Ravens 53-Man Roster After Second Preseason Game

A few more practices. One more preseason game.

That’s it until we have a 53-man roster for real. It’s almost here.

Of course, that first 53-man that formulates next weekend doesn’t amount to much as the Ravens will be adding players from other rosters and trying to make various moves. And then we get the 53 that starts practicing and moving to Week 1. (And, yes, we already have some practice squad projections, too).

We have a few shakeups in this projection; more than most other recent iterations. All of the mystery really remains on one side of the ball. And than will continue into the season, with so much new and uncertain and unproven with Declan Doyle’s offense, while Jesse Minter's defense best be ready to perform in midseason form a few weeks from now.

Don't expect many players truly on the roster bubble, let alone on the roster, to do much of anything Friday night against the Commanders and that's mostly practice squad spots at stake.

Offense (25)

All of a sudden things got complicated for this group. The trip to Minnesota resulted in some minor injuries and their first major injury with Danny Pinter’s patella tendon, and also the first dark cloud of legal matters with Rashod Bateman, whose always seemed like damaged goods to me, having his arrest from June come to light.

QB (2) – Lamar Jackson, Snoop Huntley: Joe Fagnone did it again. Pretty amazing stuff from an undrafted kid from UCONN.

RB (4) – Derrick Henry, Justice Hill, Adam Randall, Rasheen Ali: Both Randall and Ali banged up isn’t great. Jonathan Ward probably isn’t a great fit but he might have a chance here pending these medicals. Regardless, I think they are going to need some numbers here and I’m no longer going with a three-man projection.

TE (4) – Mark Andrews, Durham Smythe, Matthew Hibner, Josh Cuevas: I think they’ll regret not signing Darren Waller and going so inexperienced here.  

WR (6) - Zay Flowers, WAIVER CLAIM/signing/trade, Ja’Kobi Lane, Elijah Sarratt, Devontez Walker, LaJohntay Wester: The allegations around Rashod Bateman’s arrest for family violence are ugly. The NFL created the Commissioner’s Exempt List with these types of situations in mind. Maybe they trade a corner for a depth receiver or sign someone cut elsewhere.

OL (9) - Ronnie Stanley, Vega Ioane, John Simpson, Roger Rosengarten, Ehtan Pocic, Jovaughn Gwyn, Carson Vinson, Emery Jones, Andrew Vorhees: I was skeptical about Gwyn being more than a practice squad guy before Pinter suffered a season-ending injury. Pocic was always going to be the starting center.

Defense (25)

There just doesn't seem to be too much to wring your hands over on this side fo the ball. They have more corners than they know what to do with. They have a lot of deep depth at some other spots but those decisions will be more about whether to cut them or put them on the practice squad, not so much for the 53-man itself.

DL (7) – Nnamdi Madubuike, Travis Jones, Calais Campbell, Broderick Washington, John Jenkins, Rayshaun Benny, Adisa Isaac: Does Aeneas Peebles having a four-pressure game change the math? I’m still slotting him to the practice squad but many that is Isaac.

LB (7) – Trey Hendrickson, Roquan Smith, Teddye Buchanan, Zion Young, Mike Green, Tavius Robinson, Trenton Simpson: Wonder if Buchanan needs a few weeks inactive until he is good to go with so much time he missed.

CB (6) – Nate Wiggins, Chidobe Awuzie, Marlon Humphrey, Chandler Rivers, TJ Tampa, Keyon Martin: Somebody is getting dealt and maybe it’s someone listed above, and maybe not. Hope Amani Oruwariye makes it to the practice squad.

S (5) – Kyle Hamilton, Malaki Starks, Jaylinn Hawkins, K’Von Wallace, Keondre Jackson: Said it before and will say it again - it’s a loaded group. Going to see some interesting blitzes from this group and not just Hamilton.

Special Teams (3)

K – Tyler Loop – Would like to see him try some from 50 plus on Friday.

P – Ryan Eckley – Monster game from him Saturday. Love to see it.

LS – Nick Moore – Steady Eady. Er, Steady Nick.
