Versatility, Adaptability, and Consistency

So, on Coach Jeff Hafley’s team, can you play a role in more than one position?

Can you play and contribute in multiple ways?

And are you adaptable, able to learn new positions or re-acclimate to a familiar position you played in college?

Are you consistent in your approach to the game, successfully executing reps on the field, and in learning the playbook?

From Coach Hafley’s comments over the past few weeks, it appears that players with versatility, adaptability, and consistency will be held in high regard and have an excellent chance of making the 53-man roster.

Let’s look at a few players currently on the roster.

My subjective assessment results from the observations fans and sports writers have expressed thus far from training camp.

I chose three players (out of many) because they will be sorely needed to perform for the Dolphins in 2026.

Jonah Savaiinaea, DL – Drafted in 2025 by former GM Chris Grier

Savaiinaea was rated by PFF stats as one of the worst offensive linemen in 2025.

Now, in all fairness, the Dolphins coaches, led by Mike McDaniel, had him play on the left side of the line, contrary to his college position on the right side.

Thus far in camp, Savaiinaea has played at right guard and reports indicate an improvement in his performance.

An indication that he has demonstrated the ability to adapt and versatility.

Whether that translates to significantly more consistency through the remainder of camp and in the season remains to be seen.

Kayden Proctor, OL – First round pick by the Dolphins in 2026

Although Proctor played both guard and tackle in college, Coach Hafley has moved him primarily to right guard.

The coaches strongly believe that with his physical presence and footwork, he can successfully play the guard position in the NFL.

Again, versatility and adaptability are checked thus far.

The key now is to be consistent going forward.

Caleb Douglas, WR – Drafted in the third round in 2026

Douglas has shown excellent skills thus far in camp.

Reports indicate he possesses a versatile route tree that will serve him well in playing different wide receiver positions.

With his 6’4” frame and his good connection with Malik Willis in camp, Douglas is expected to compete for a starting role.

Now, he needs to show he can perform well when the competition arrives in preseason.

That is, be consistent.

If Hafley can construct a roster of 53 players with versatility, adaptability, and consistency, we will have an enjoyable season.
