The Minnesota Vikings ensured they kept a key member of their defense for an extra year because of his Pro Bowl-worthy performance in 2024.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Vikings and linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel agreed on a one-year, $23 million extension on Tuesday. Van Ginkel will also receive $22.4 million guaranteed to keep him in Minnesota through the 2026 season.

Van Ginkel signed a two-year, $20 million contract with the Vikings in 2024. His new deal solidifies Minnesota’s defense in multiple ways.

Last season, Van Ginkel dominated the field with the best season of his career as he made 79 tackles, 19 quarterback hits, 18 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, six pass deflections, two interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and one forced fumble in 17 games. He was rewarded with his first trip to the Pro Bowl, was named to the AP second-team All-Pro team, and was a finalist for defensive player of the year.

Before joining the Vikings last year, he played five seasons with the Miami Dolphins, going back and forth as a starter in the lineup. Van Ginkel made his mark on special teams early in his career, appearing in at least 51% of the special teams snaps from 2019 through 2022.

Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores gets a key contributor back on his defense. Van Ginkel fits Flores' needs. His versatility in pass coverage versus pressuring the quarterback makes him one of the best hybrid edge rushers in the NFL.

While there are still questions about what the team is considering with its secondary, Minnesota’s very expensive $300 million offseason continues with locking in Van Ginkel for one extra year.
