The Minnesota Vikings have experienced an up-and-down start to their 2025 season, including fluctuating quarterback play from J.J. McCarthy.
There will be even more uncertainty surrounding the quarterback situation, with McCarthy expected to miss multiple weeks due to an ankle injury.
ESPN's NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Monday that the 22-year-old quarterback is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks with a high ankle sprain he suffered against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night.
This report subsequently followed the news that head coach Kevin O'Connell announced McCarthy will miss Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
This news is quite concerning when assessing how erratic McCarthy has been over the course of the first two weeks of the season.
Other than the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bears in Week 1, McCarthy has been abysmal, struggling to string together drives in a quarterback-friendly scheme with Justin Jefferson at his disposal.

Fair or not, McCarthy is under high-level pressure in his first year as a starter.
Minnesota was a 14-3 team last season with Sam Darnold as the starting quarterback. Despite that, the Vikings allowed Darnold to walk in free agency and turn the keys to their 2024 first-round pick.
So far, McCarthy has not been an upgrade for Minnesota at the quarterback position. Quite frankly, it is evident he has been a downgrade for the Vikings through two games, and now he will have to miss some time.
There is already doubt about whether McCarthy is the long-term franchise quarterback for Minnesota. With the lack of experience, missing time is not prescribed for a quarterback who is taking over a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
