Vikings’ Kyler Murray Lands Strong Take Amid QB Battle

Kyler Murray has looked every bit the dual-threat quarterback the Minnesota Vikings sought when they signed him in free agency, impressing observers during Wednesday’s training camp practice and solidifying his case to start in Week 1.

Reporter Will Ragatz noted that Murray performed at a high level, prompting the assessment that it would be surprising if the veteran is not under center for the season opener.

“I’d be pretty stunned if Murray isn’t the Vikings’ quarterback in Week 1,” Ragatz said.

The former No. 1 overall pick has steadily built momentum in his competition with J.J. McCarthy.

Murray, who turns 29 on Friday, joined the Vikings on a one-year deal in March after the Arizona Cardinals released him. Minnesota pays him the veteran minimum of $1.3 million while Arizona remains responsible for the bulk of his guaranteed salary.

The move brought an experienced arm and proven mobility to a team seeking consistency at the position. Murray’s career numbers underscore his production: 20,460 passing yards, 121 touchdown passes and 60 interceptions across 87 games, along with a 67.1% completion rate and 92.2 passer rating.

He has also rushed for 3,193 yards and 32 touchdowns, averaging 6.0 yards per carry. Those dual-threat skills have been on display throughout camp as he works within coach Kevin O’Connell’s scheme.

In 2024, Murray started all 17 games for Arizona, throwing for 3,851 yards and 21 touchdowns against 11 interceptions with a 93.5 rating. He added 572 rushing yards and five scores that season.

A foot injury limited him to five games in 2025, when he completed 68.3% of his passes for 962 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions. He still contributed 173 rushing yards and one touchdown in limited action.

The Vikings viewed Murray as an ideal veteran presence capable of elevating the offense or pushing the younger McCarthy. O’Connell has emphasized competition while evaluating both quarterbacks in practice settings.

Murray has connected effectively with receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison during camp sessions. His ability to extend plays with his legs and deliver accurate throws downfield has drawn consistent praise from those watching closely.

The quarterback competition remains open officially, yet Murray’s recent form has shifted perceptions toward him as the likely Week 1 starter against the Green Bay Packers. Practice performances have shown the accuracy and decision-making that once earned him two Pro Bowl selections.

Murray’s path to Minnesota followed seven seasons in Arizona, where he was drafted first overall in 2019 out of Oklahoma. He won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors that year after throwing for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns while rushing for 544 yards and four scores.

Subsequent seasons featured strong output, including a 2020 campaign with 3,971 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and a career-high 819 rushing yards with 11 scores. Injuries and team struggles later complicated his tenure with the Cardinals.

In Minnesota, Murray benefits from one of the league’s stronger supporting casts. Jefferson’s presence gives him a reliable deep threat, while the offensive line and tight end T.J. Hockenson provide additional weapons.

Observers note that Murray’s mobility could create mismatches in the NFC North. His career rushing total of more than 3,100 yards ranks among the higher marks for active quarterbacks.

Training camp continues with more padded practices ahead. Both Murray and McCarthy will share first-team repetitions as the staff gathers more data before naming a starter.

Murray has described the transition as challenging due to split practice time while learning a new system. Still, his recent showings suggest he is adapting quickly and producing the explosive plays the Vikings envisioned when they pursued him.

If Murray maintains this trajectory, he appears positioned to reclaim a starting role and potentially reset his career trajectory with a strong 2026 performance. The Vikings, meanwhile, gain a proven option at a position that has seen significant turnover in recent years.

Wednesday’s practice reinforced the sense that Murray’s combination of arm talent and athleticism remains intact. With the regular season approaching, the focus now turns to whether that form continues through the remainder of camp.
