The Vikings signed Odell Beckham Jr. to the practice squad on Wednesday. On the surface, there isn’t an obvious role for him. But what if the signing is a precursor to something else?
Minnesota’s top three receivers appear to be Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and Jauan Jennings, while T.J. Hockenson remains a major part of the passing game following his 13-reception performance against the Dolphins. Tai Felton and Myles Price are behind them on the depth chart.
So why Beckham? As former Vikings linebacker Ben Leber reacted, the move makes you go “hmmm.”

“I don’t think there’s really anything extra that’s worth reading into when it comes to this Beckham move,” says Bring Me The Sports’ senior Vikings writer Will Ragatz.
“He’s almost 34 and hasn’t caught a pass since 2024. Whether or not Justin Jefferson plays this week feels entirely unrelated to this signing (if anything, Jeshaun Jones would probably be the practice squad elevation if Jefferson doesn’t play). Even more absurd is the notion that this means the Vikings are going to trade Jordan Addison. This is simply an opportunity to get a look at a once-incredible receiver and see if he has anything left. We’ll see what happens, but it’s more likely than not that OBJ never catches a pass in a Vikings uniform.”
Ragatz is probably right. Beckham is 33, hasn’t caught a pass since 2024, and might never play a snap for Minnesota.
But why now?
Beckham was released by the Giants after logging only 20 snaps in three games. He didn’t play at all last season, which included a six-game suspension after he tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug. In 2024, Beckham had just nine catches for 55 yards with the Dolphins.
You have to go back to 2023, when he caught 35 passes for 565 yards and three touchdowns with the Ravens, to find the last time Beckham had an even somewhat meaningful role as a receiver. He missed the 2022 season with a torn ACL suffered with the Rams in the Super Bowl.
That’s where the obvious connection comes in. Kevin O’Connell was the Rams’ offensive coordinator in 2021, when Beckham helped Los Angeles win the Super Bowl.
Maybe this is nothing more than O’Connell giving a former player an opportunity. Or maybe the Vikings are wondering if Beckham has enough left to help them somewhere down the road.
The most obvious opportunity could be at the bottom of the receiver depth chart.
Felton has one catch for 14 yards and has been targeted just three times this season. More notably, he hasn’t produced much even when given significant playing time. With Jefferson out, Felton played 32 snaps against Tampa Bay and 46 against Miami. That’s 78 offensive snaps with almost zero production attached to them.
This is where the speculation gets more interesting, and probably more unlikely.
The Vikings have already exercised the fifth-year option on Addison’s contract, but his long-term future in Minnesota remains unresolved. If Addison eventually wants an extension worth somewhere around $30 million annually, the Vikings will have to decide whether they want to devote that much money to a second receiver alongside Jefferson.
They certainly don’t need to make that decision now. Addison remains a pivotal part of the offense, and trading him during a season in which Minnesota has Super Bowl aspirations would be risky.
But the Vikings also suddenly have a major need on the offensive line after losing left guard Donovan Jackson for the season.
If Minnesota is scouring the trade market for an upgrade on the offensive line, Addison would be one of its most valuable trade chips. Especially if they don’t plan to extend him. And if the Vikings believe Jennings can handle a larger role while Beckham provides veteran depth behind him, the math becomes at least a little more interesting.
Again, it’s probably all nothing. But it’s fair to wonder if there’s more to the story.
