Tampa Bay Buccaneers veteran defensive tackle explained how players addressed their 0-4 start before Thursday night’s victory in Dallas.
The Pewter Pirates entered Thursday night’s matchup against the Dallas Cowboys as 8.5-point underdogs, according to most sportsbooks. At 0-4, Tampa Bay also faced questions about its ability to turn the season around while starting undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels.
Despite those challenges, the Buccaneers secured a 24-16 road victory at AT&T Stadium. Following the upset, defensive tackle Vita Vea discussed the conversations that took place among players before the game.
Vea appeared on Amazon Prime’s postgame show and explained how Tampa Bay’s players addressed their disappointing start. The veteran defensive tackle described the discussions as a turning point for the team.
“I think it was more so us players,” Vea said about meetings that occurred during the week, per the JoeBucsFan. “I think we got together as a unit and talked amongst ourselves. It was one of those come-to-Jesus moments. ‘We’re not really 0-4. We’re not playing like we are 0-4.’ We were shutting it down on defense. Offense was doing their thing. We were just not finishing at the end of the game. It was one of those things we harped on throughout the whole week.”
The message centered on the players’ belief that their performances had not reflected their potential. Tampa Bay had struggled to close out games during its four-game losing streak. Against Dallas, the Buccaneers finally put together a complete performance.
Tampa Bay’s defense limited a previously productive Dallas offense to 16 points. The Cowboys had averaged 30.5 points per game through their first four contests. They managed just two touchdown drives against the Buccaneers, including one on their opening scripted possession.
The offense also delivered a productive performance, recording 419 total yards and 241 rushing yards. Daniels helped guide the unit while Tampa Bay’s defense made key stops throughout the game. The result gave the Buccaneers their first victory of the season and ended their four-game losing streak.
