After the Washington Commanders opted not to put in waiver claims following the team's final cuts, general manager Adam Peters set about molding his practice squad for the 2024 season. This unfortunately couldn't include edge rusher K.J. Henry or cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields, who got scooped up by the Cincinnati Bengals and Carolina Panthers respectively. Practice squad members have become increasingly important since the NFL moved to a 17-game campaign. They can be elevated onto the actice roster three times before teams are forced to make the move up permanent. This provides some extra leeway in case of injuries and ensures players are fully aware of their schematic responsibilities rather than being dragged off the street and thrown into the fire. Washington had 16 spots to fill and plenty of options at their disposal. Most are usually filled by those with upside who didn't quite make the initial 53-man roster.
