WATCH OUT, NFL: The 49ers Are Loaded Again

The San Francisco 49ers enter the 2026 NFL season with plenty to prove.

After a disappointing end to last season, when the 49ers were blown out 41-6 by the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs, San Francisco is looking to bounce back and reestablish itself as one of the NFC’s elite teams.

The good news? The core of this team is still loaded with talent.

Brock Purdy Has to Take the Next Step

Everything starts with Brock Purdy.

The 49ers have officially made Purdy their franchise quarterback, and expectations are higher than ever. He enters the season surrounded by an impressive group of weapons and an offensive system designed by Kyle Shanahan.

Purdy will have Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle and a new weapon in veteran wide receiver Mike Evans at his disposal. San Francisco also added Christian Kirk, giving Purdy even more options in the passing game.

If Purdy can limit turnovers while continuing to make the big throws, San Francisco could have one of the NFL’s most dangerous offenses.

McCaffrey Is Back

Christian McCaffrey remains one of the biggest keys to the entire team.

After returning to form and winning NFL Comeback Player of the Year, McCaffrey enters 2026 looking to prove that he is still one of the league’s most dangerous offensive weapons.

With Shanahan’s run heavy system, McCaffrey should once again be at the center of the offense.

The Defense Is the Biggest Question

San Francisco’s defense has the star power to be excellent.

Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Deommodore Lenoir lead a veteran group that has plenty of experience playing in big games. All three are also part of the 49ers’ eight-player captain group for 2026.

However, the defensive line has already taken some major hits.

Defensive tackle Alfred Collins suffered a season-ending knee injury, while defensive end Sam Okuayinonu is also expected to miss significant time. The 49ers will now have to rely on younger players to provide depth up front.

That could become the biggest weakness on the roster.

The NFC West Is Brutal

The 49ers won’t have an easy path back to the top.

The Los Angeles Rams have completely reloaded, adding Myles Garrett and bringing Aaron Donald back. The Seattle Seahawks are also coming off a Super Bowl championship.

San Francisco opens the season against the Rams in Australia in the NFL’s first regular-season game in the country.

The NFC West could once again be one of the toughest divisions in football.

Super Bowl Expectations

The 49ers have enough talent to make a deep playoff run.

Purdy, McCaffrey, Kittle, Evans, Bosa and Warner give San Francisco elite players on both sides of the football. Shanahan also has plenty of postseason experience.

But the 49ers need to stay healthy, improve defensively and avoid the mistakes that ended their season last year.

If those things happen, San Francisco could be right back in the Super Bowl conversation.

The 49ers aren’t rebuilding. They’re chasing another championship and 2026 could be their chance to prove they still belong among the NFC’s elite.
