The odds were stacked against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their home stand in Week 9 of the 2025 NFL regular season against the league’s top offensive team – the Indianapolis Colts. After taking a big punch to the chin two weeks in a row, the Steelers defense let the cobwebs clear and punched back.

Linebacker Payton Wilson wasn’t just fired up on Sunday afternoon; he led Pittsburgh in tackles (14 total, 10 solo) defensively, but also dialed up two takeaways. One, he earned on his own. The other, Wilson created in order for rookie Jack Sawyer to earn his career first interception.

Snagging an INT

In the opening minutes of the second quarter of the game, Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was strip-sacked by T.J. Watt and the Steelers offense capitalized with a touchdown 12 plays later; a one-yard run by Jaylen Warren drew the score to 7-7.

On the next offensive series for Indianapolis, Wilson stepped into a passing lane for an interception on the second play of the drive.

On 1st &10 at the IND 25, Jonathan Taylor – who was held to just 45 yards rushing by Pittsburgh in this game – took a handoff up the middle for five yards before being brought down by Cameron Heyward and Alex Highsmith. On 2nd & 5, Jones took the snap and targeted receiver Josh Downs over the middle of the field. Wilson jumped the route and made the catch, instead, returning the takeaway 17 yards.

The Steelers offense went on to convert the turnover into a 2-play touchdown drive sealed by a pass from Aaron Rodgers to tight end Pat Freiermuth to put the Steelers ahead, 14-7.

Tipping it to Jack

In the third quarter, on the Colts’ second offensive drive, Wilson struck turnover gold again. On 2nd & 1 at the PIT 35, Jones and the Indy offense went no huddle; Jones took the snap from shotgun. Wilson, lined up just outside Alex Highsmith on the left, streaked in at a different angle than the edge rusher. Feeling Highsmith’s pressure, Jones threw into the blitz… and Wilson got high to tip the pass. The deflected ball came down into the waiting arms of Sawyer who returned it four yards before Jones made the tackle himself.

Following Wilson’s outstanding performance, teammate Patrick Queen reportedly told members of the press the following:

Officially, Wilson had 14 tackles, 2 pass defenses, and an interception per ESPN stats. Not a bad day of work at all. Certainly game changing.
