Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young is looking to continue to build on a strong finish to last season after seeing himself benched in the early weeks.
Young, who was the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, appears to finally have stability on the offensive side of the ball with second-year head coach Dave Canales continuing to invest in him.
But what are the expectations for Young now entering year three in the NFL?
Right now, Canales isn’t going to put a cap on it, especially after what he saw during the team’s practice earlier this week.
“Honestly, my expectations are just wide open, especially as he goes in there with command like he’s been doing this offseason and really just leading the guys,” Canales said. “There were some great plays out there, some great timing, throws but also just the level of comfort like we talked about with the offense, know the words, making different tweaks, and he’s a part of that process.”
In the final eight games of the season Young threw for 12 touchdowns and just three interceptions, as he played the best football of his early career. This past offseason the Panthers have continued to add to its arsenal drafting wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan in the top 10 to hopefully give Young an official go-to option.
Even with the open expectations, Canales does expect Young to take more control of the offense this fall.
“These are conversations that we’ve been having with him going back to the end of last season that we want to implement and just be able to, especially in the pass game, become Bryce young offense,” Canales said, “become this collective thing and get the chemistry going. I feel really confident about what I saw today, especially going against the defense, and just the speed that we were playing with.”
