What Miami’s Week 1 Depth Chart Revealed
The official depth chart for each team has been released. The Dolphins placed their 53-man roster into sections of starters across all 3 phases of the game.
This is what they revealed heading into Week 1.
The Youth Movement
When it comes to youth, nobody beats the Miami Dolphins. The team is full of young draft picks and young players on prove-it contracts. The depth chart listed 3 starting wide receivers, a starting tight end, and the lone fullback on the roster. Miami’s 3 starting receivers are listed as Chris Bell (rookie), Caleb Douglas (rookie), and Malik Washington (3rd year). Veteran wideout Jalen Tolbert was surprisingly left off the starting list, even after building a good connection with Malik Willis throughout the offseason.
On the defensive side of the ball, Miami may be even more youthful. The 3 starting cornerbacks listed are Chris Johnson (rookie), JuJu Brents (4th year), and Jason Marshall (2nd year). 2nd-year safety Dante Trader is also a starter. Not many starts across the board for the defensive backs, but their youth and intangibles are clearly the key for this regime to build from the ground up.
Linebacker -> Safety
Rookie Kyle Louis has officially been moved from linebacker to safety on the depth chart. The team announced him as a linebacker when he was drafted in April, but his versatility made him sort of positionless for many teams during the pre-draft process. Louis played snaps at both linebacker and safety (overhang) in camp and preseason, but it seems that Jeff Hafley may prefer him in that “star” player role. He will play just outside of the box, most likely, and sometimes come into the box as a versatile blitzer. His usage will be intriguing.
Kyle Louis is listed as the backup safety to Dante Trader.

Small Surprises
Nothing crazy pops out from the depth chart. The team didn’t necessarily hide their cards when it came to who they were going to play for the majority of starting reps, especially when plenty of players sat out of preseason to preserve their health.
There were some smaller surprises, though. Zayne Anderson, the former Packers special teams ace, is listed as a starter for Miami in week 1. It seemed that Michael Taaffe, the rookie out of Texas, may have done enough in camp and preseason to earn that spot, but Anderson gets the nod. Anderson is a 29-year-old, big-bodied safety who will play closer to the line of scrimmage. He has played just over 150 defensive snaps in his career, but being trusted as a starter on this defense shows promise.
Jaylen Wright, who has been very inconsistent since his rookie season, is listed ahead of 2nd year back Ollie Gordon on the depth chart. Wright is also listed as the second man on kickoff return. He has explosive ability but is inconsistent at catching kickoffs in the air.
Recently acquired Caedan Wallace is listed as the primary backup at right tackle and right guard, with rookie DJ Campbell being 3rd on the depth chart at guard. Even though Campbell was very impressive in the preseason, the Dolphins may keep him stashed for a potential year-2 jump to start if Jonah Savaiinaea struggles again. For now, Wallace gets the trust of offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik in an immediate replacement situation.
Week 1 will definitely be interesting, and the depth chart can change week to week. But for now, your Miami Dolphins starters are locked in.
