GLENDALE – The NFL trade deadline is less than two weeks away, with the Arizona Cardinals sitting at 2-5. The discussion of whether the franchise should be buyers or sellers at the deadline is another topic. However, in the scenario general manager Monti Ossenfort wants to improve the roster, there is only one position for him and his staff to target: Cornerback.
Arizona is 23rd in passing yards allowed in the NFL and were much worse before last week’s performance against the Green Bay Packers, allowing only 168 passing yards. Regardless, the secondary lost two of its top defensive backs before the season, lost Garrett Williams in Week 2 with no timetable for his return and have had to rely on rookies and reserves to pick up the slack.
Ossenfort should look to bulk up the cornerback room by trading for Tennessee Titans defensive back Roger McCeary. The former second-round pick is on a Titans team that is currently 1-6 and still early on their rebuild. McCeary is 25 years old and has a 67.6 PFF grade, placing him 30th out of 112th eligible cornerbacks.
Rumors have circulated that Tennessee has been looking to recoup some assets for McCreary by trading him near the Nov. 4th NFL trade deadline. If the Cardinals were to add McCreary it would surely help the secondary’s struggles and add some much-needed experience. Then, once Williams returns from injury reserve, the cornerback room will filled with young, talented defensive backs that could turn around the poor first half of the season.
