What We Are Learning So Far

The 2026 Miami Dolphins are entering a transitional season under a new coaching staff, with OTAs offering the first glimpse of a team still being defined. The new staff has established a tone built on discipline, fundamentals, and repetition. Practices have been structured and detail-focused, with less emphasis on complex installs and more on building a strong foundation. Communication and mistake correction are constant priorities, signaling a culture of accountability and consistency rather than reputation or past roles. 

Malik Willis has handled a significant portion of early first-team reps as the offense installs its base system. The focus has been on decision-making, timing, and command within a simplified structure. While his athletic traits add a different dimension, the coaching staff is still evaluating whether he can operate consistently as a long-term option. 

The defense is clearly undergoing a rebuild, with multiple starting roles still undecided. Coaches are rotating players frequently to evaluate fit within the new system. Most of the defense is unsettled due to turnover. The unit is being shaped around versatility, effort, and adaptability rather than established depth charts or defined starters, with the exception of a couple of players. 

Younger players and undrafted prospects are actively competing for roles rather than simply participating in camp. This is especially visible in the trenches, secondary, and special teams. Veterans are being challenged daily, and performance is outweighing contract status or experience. The result is a highly competitive environment where consistency is required to hold any job.

The defining message of OTAs is that no role is guaranteed. Every job is open, and every rep matters. Rookies are earning opportunities, veterans are being pushed, and depth charts remain fluid. Competition is the foundation of the current approach. This mindset has created a noticeably higher level of urgency across the roster, where consistency and execution are being weighed heavily. 

The Dolphins remain a team under construction, with identity and structure still forming.

The coaching staff is prioritizing evaluation, competition, and fundamentals over immediate stability. Key questions remain at quarterback, on defense, and in overall offensive rhythm. At this stage, Miami is not finished; it is still being built.
