For 38 years in the Philadelphia media market, Howard Eskin has bee a fixture - albeit a controversial one as a key voice at Sportsradio WIP.
But in a surprise announcement on Friday, Eskin announced his departure from the station.
Tweeted Eskin: "After 38 years I am moving on from Sportsradio WIP where I launched the station’s sports talk franchise in 1986. I leave the station with great affection for the listeners who have made the work I do so fulfilling during my time there. I’m looking forward to what comes next career-wise. I promise you’ll be the first to know. Thank you.''
Eskin built a reputation in part on arguing with his audience ... and bashing Philly enemies like the Dallas Cowboys.
The online responses from Eagles fans typified the love/hate relationship the audience has had with the combative Eskin. One tweet frames it all nicely ...
"Howard Eskin surely on the Mt Rushmore for Philly Sports radio While I didn’t always agree with you, the always entertained. Cheers Howard," a fan wrote.
In a statement Friday afternoon, WIP station owner Audacy confirmed that Eskin and the company "have parted ways'' but shared no further details.
Notably, Eskin's son, Spike Eskin, is the program director at SportsRadio WIP and hosts the station's afternoon show. Spike addressed his father's departure on the program.
"I picked up what to do and what not to do over the years, and that's about it," Spike said, adding how much he loves his dad.
