On Wednesday morning, the New Orleans Saints announced each rookie's jersey number, with the most notable being Tyler Shough wearing No. 6.
Jersey numbers may seem insignificant, but to a lot of players and fans, they mean a whole lot. Wearing a former great's jersey is either an honor or can rub the fanbase the wrong way. Today, we're going to look at each rookie's jersey number and see who the most recent player to wear it was while also looking at some notable names who wore it in the past.
The Saints' first pick in the draft, LT Kelvin Banks, will wear No. 71, which was last worn by Ryan Ramczyk, who was the Saints' right tackle from 2017-2024. Unfortunately, Ramczyk had a bunch of knee problems, and after sitting out for all of last season, he officially retired from the NFL earlier this offseason.
The Saints' newest addition to their quarterback room, Tyler Shough, will wear No. 6. He wore No. 9 in college, but that number will obviously never be worn by another Saint in honor of Drew Brees's legacy. The last player to wear No. 6 for the Saints was Willie Gay in 2024 with other notable names being Thomas Morestead and Marcus Maye.
The Saints' third round selection, Vernon Broughton, will wear No. 91 this year, which was formerly worn by Kendal Vickers in 2024 when he was mainly on the practice squad. The most notable Saints player to wear 91 is Will Smith, one of the best DL in franchise history.
Jonas Sanker, the Saints' newest safety, will wear No. 33 in his rookie season, which was last worn by Jordan Mims in 2024. Mims rushed for 70 yards last season and changed to No. 24 for the 2025 season.
The Saints made Danny Stutsman their first pick in day three of the NFL Draft, and he will wear No. 47, which was previously owned by Khaleke Hudson, who was mainly a practice squad player in 2024. Before Hudson, Alex Anzalone wore 47 from 2017-2020.
The Saints' newest cornerback is taking Paulson Adebo's No. 29 from him just months after he signed with the New York Giants. Adebo wore it from 2021-2024, and it looks like the Saints will have another 29 at CB for the foreseeable future.
The Saints got a steal in Devin Neal in the sixth round. He's the guy they think can pair up with Alvin Kamara and form a lethal 1-2 punch while wearing the number 30. The last guy to wear 30 for the Saints was Roderic Teamer, who wore it in 2024. Otherwise, there aren't too many notable No. 30s (I was born in 2002, so I'm sorry if I missed anyone from the 1900s).
The Saints' first seventh round pick was Moliki Matavao, who will wear No. 80 to begin his career. Jermaine Jackson wore it in 2024, but the most notable name is certainly Jimmy Graham, who wore it during his two stints in New Orleans.
With their ninth and final selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Saints took Fadil Diggs, who will wear No. 40, previously owned by Chase Hansen in 2022. Prior to Hansen was Alex Armah in 2021, but then you have to go back to 2016 to find Delvin Breaux, who wore it in his two seasons with the Saints.
